Reading - Yes/No/Not Given question type-1

Consider the following Passage:

These are the 4 steps that you need to follow in order to answer Yes/NO/Not Given questions:

1.Read the ques and look for important or key words:
Q7:Binoculars,Crew locker,Southampton
are the key words.

2.Now try to locate these words in the passage.

Q7:You find them in Para 4 from line 3 onwards

3.Now go back to the ques and read the question by understanding the complete meaning.

This stage is important, as you dont understand the meaning properly then you will end up with an incorrect answer.

Q7:There is a crew loacker in Southampton where the binoculars, which are used by the men on watch, is kept or left behind. That means it is not on the ship .

4.Finally go back to the passage and compare the meaning that you understood with the part of the passage where you have located those key words.

Q7: From Line 3 it says that there was a change in the crew(workers) in the last minute and the officer who was incharge of the binoculars was transferred in Southampton and the new crew did not know where it was. However, the binoculars was kept in a cupboord  on the ship (onboard) without the new crew's knowledge.

But the Ques say it was left in Southampton, however we see that the bioculars was still on the ship, although the crew did not know about it.

So the Answer is NO.

Please read the above extremely carefully. If you follow these steps then you will find solving yes/no/ng questions very easy.Otherwise, you will depend on guess work.

Now try to solve the rest of the ques on your own.

Answers and explanation to the rest:

8.NG (Para4,Line 4,Although Fleet says that he could have seen the ice berg if there was a Binoculars but there is no mention that it was the "Major factor" behind the accident)

9.F (Para5,It says that the wireless system was not working "earlier that day"hat means it was working at the time of the accident as Philips was " Clearing a backlog of personal messages.." SO ther wireless was working at the time of accident.

10.T (Para 5 line6 says he maintained the speed of the ship despite the warnings of the ice ahead. So he knew about it.)

11.F (PARA5,last sentence says, Howell believed that Smith was just following the procedures and was not reckless. So He did not think he was irresponsible)

12.T (Para6,line4,"..surpassed(more) the board of trade's requirements.." so yes it had seated more people than the requirement.

13.NG (Para 6,last sentence, although it says that the life boat drill(rehearsal) was cancelled but it doesnt say specifically that this would have saved more lives. SO we cant say yes or no.)

More explanation to Ques 13:

Although the para 6,line 7 says "..in the  absence of of better trainig and preparation." do we may assume it is talking about the drill but then training and preparation MAY mean Drill or Rehearsal. It is not definite that it only means that.As it may also mean training of the crew to handle lifeboats and other preparations. So there is an element of doubt in this.

Always remember that if you are not entirely sure whether the answer is YEs or NO, then the answer will be NG.

NG is there to confuse you.So be careful with it. Again it is only when the answer cannot be a clear YES or a clear NO.

Lets do another one:

Answers with explanations:

9.F(The question says that Formal model is still common i western school but Para 6,says that it was common till 1960 but (line4) it has become outmoded(outdated). So the answer is clearly False.
10.T (Para 6 line 10  says thats"..the demonstrator approach must be abandoned(never used) in all fields.." SO the answer is True
11.T (Para 7 line4..".the delegator style confronts(oppose) this problem by recognising that interpersonal communication.."
12.T (Para 7 line7,"..not suited..medical practitioner." so the answr is True)

Another reading

Answers:

22.T (Para C,Line4, "Pure vegetable oil is Bland(Without taste or smell). So it doesnt have any flavour at all.

23.NG( Para C, there is no clear comparision between the both ,so the asnwer has to be NG)

24.T( Para D , The word "Some" in the question is important. We see CHina and India, which are asian countries, are mentioned. So the answer is True. However, if the word"Some" was not mentioned then the answer would have been NG)

25.F (Para D, the WOrd"All" in the question is important as it means 100%.But when we read Line 1, it says its over 90% which is not 100% and so not ALL.So the answer is False.

I suggest you read the explanation carefully and ask when you dont understand. Please dont ignore this stage, otherwise you will keep on having doubts in this question type.Lets clear it here and go ahead.

Please understand that Reading is really a Tough Part in IELTS. You will always face some difficulty, but we need to constantly keep trying. And this will take time.

Few things we need to keep in mind:
1.Please follow the steps or rules I suggest for doing each question type.Like the 4 steps I gave for Y/N/NG.
2.You need to constantly improve our Vocabulary(ability to understand difficult words). As you might have noticed that you get a wrong answer because you, either didnt understand  word/s in the passage or you misunderstood word/s in the passage.
3.You need improve your reading skills.I suggest you devote at least 1 hour everyday to read a newspaper or a novel. Try understanding what you are reading by re-reading that portion. This will also develop your GK,which is also essential for solving your reading test.

If you follow the above ,you will find reading would become relatively easy by the time you give your exam.

Please follow all the 4 steps that we learnt earlier.
1.F ( The word 'both' is important here.para1 line 5 says that she got the award with her husband and in line 7 syas she was a 'sole' winner(alone).Thats why the statement is false as she only won the award with her husband once and not both the times.)

2.NG (We need to find out when did her interest begin in Science? you may get confused if you decide the answer by just reading para2 line 1. As it only says she had a good memory since childhood. But it never mentions when her interest in science begin,
Now if it had mentioend that she was interested in scince when became an adult, the answer would have been False. But that is not the case.)

3.T ( when we read para 2,line 4, we come to know that she helped her sister to study and they had an understanding that her sister will help Marie to study when she settles.Para 3 starts by telling us that "this promise was fulfilled".That means her sister heped her financially to study.)

4.F (What we are trying to find out is that did she stop her reasearch after the birth of her children? Para 6 says even the birth of her daughters did not stop her work "failed to interrupt her scientific work..")

5.T(What we are trying to find out is whether she got the teaching job that her husband was doing?..Para 7 line 3, says that she was appointed to the professorship that became vacant due to her husband's death.)

6.NG (What we are trying to look is whether her sister study the medical uses of radioactivity?..There is no mention of her sister doing any stufy on radioactivity)
